There have recently been incidents reported in the Cardiff area to south Wales Police that involved an ATM machine being tampered with. We ask that our communities be vigilant and follow the below tips:- Look Before Using: Look for signs of tampering, such as glue, broken plastic, or misaligned parts on the card slot. If the machine looks unusual, do not use it.Use Indoor/Bank ATMs: Choose ATMs located inside bank branches, as they are less likely to be tampered with than standalone machines in tourist areas or convenience stores.Use Mobile Wallets: Apple Pay, Google Pay, or other smartphone wallets, which utilize secure NFC technology instead of magnetic stripes.Secure Your PIN: Shield the keypad with your hand or wallet to prevent hidden cameras from recording your code.Monitor Accounts: Check your banking app regularly for unauthorized transactions and contact your bank via 159 if you detect any unusual activity. Check the Keypad: Before entering your PIN, gently pull on the keypad. If it feels loose or looks like an overlay (a fake keypad placed on top), do not use it.Use Credit Over Debit: If possible, use a credit card, as it offers better fraud protection and you are not losing immediate access to your cash while the bank investigates. If you have used an ATM and it did not give you any money. Contact your bank immediately and ask the local store to put a sign, advising it is out of order and then contact the ATM provider or local Police.Be vigilant. In an emergency contact 999 or for non emergencies 101. |
